What Happens at the Dentist? A Kid’s Guide to a Friendly Checkup
Going to the dentist doesn’t have to be scary—in fact, it can be fun! If you’re a kid (or a parent of one) wondering what happens during a dental checkup, this guide is just for you. At the office of Stephen J. Spencer, DDS, we believe every visit should be friendly, easy, and even exciting for the whole family.
Whether it’s your first visit or a regular stop, here’s a fun walk-through of what to expect at your child’s dentist appointment—designed especially for kids age six and up.
Meet the team, and take a tour.
As soon as you walk in, you’ll be greeted by warm smiles and welcoming faces. Our dental office in Great Falls is all about making families and kids feel comfortable. From the front desk team to the dental assistants and Dr. Spencer himself, everyone is here to help—not to scare.
Some kids like to take a quick tour before they get started. You can see where cleanings happen, meet the people who take care of your smile, and check out some of the cool tools we use. It’s a fun way to get familiar with your surroundings and learn that a trip to the dentist can be easy, and even exciting.
The Tooth Counting Game (The Exam)
Next, it’s time for the tooth counting game! You’ll sit in a comfy chair that leans back like a spaceship seat. Dr. Spencer will use a tiny mirror and a special tool to gently “count” each tooth and make sure everything looks healthy.
He might say numbers out loud or talk with the assistant while he checks each tooth. That’s just part of the routine! This exam helps us spot any early signs of trouble and keep your teeth strong as you grow. Most of the time, it’s quick, easy, and over before you know it.
The Tickle Toothbrush (The Cleaning)
Now it’s time to meet the tickle toothbrush—a special electric brush that helps clean away tiny sugar bugs (the germs that can cause cavities).
One of the best parts? You get to choose your toothpaste flavor! Bubblegum, grape, or mint—we’ve got kid-friendly flavors that make cleaning feel more like a treat. The hygienist will gently clean and polish each tooth so they’re extra smooth and sparkly.
Clean teeth not only look great, but they also they help keep your whole mouth healthy between visits!
Smile for the Camera (X-rays, if needed)
Sometimes we need to take a closer look at what’s happening inside your mouth. That’s where dental X-rays come in. These are special pictures that help Dr. Spencer see things that aren’t visible to the eye—like teeth that haven’t come in yet or small cavities hiding between teeth.
Getting X-rays is quick and easy. It doesn’t hurt at all and helps us keep your smile in great shape.
A Shiny Finish and a Prize
After your cleaning and X-rays (if needed), you might get a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is like a superhero shield for your teeth—it helps make them stronger and protects them from sugar bugs between checkups.
And the best part? At the end of your visit, you get to pick a prize! Stickers, small toys, or a fun surprise from the treasure chest are our way of saying “great job” for taking care of your teeth.
Before you leave, we’ll remind you to brush twice a day, floss every night, and eat foods that are good for your smile. The better you care for your teeth at home, the easier your next dental checkup will be.
